The Brief
Refuel Nutrition is a growing meal prep business producing fresh, nutritionally balanced meals for customers across South Wales. With demand increasing, the business identified the need for a dedicated prep kitchen to complement its existing premises at Penmen Industrial Estate.
Refuel Nutrition approached WAM Engineering Services to support the full fit-out of a new unit in Blackwood, transforming it into a compliant, efficient and future-ready commercial prep kitchen.
“We needed a kitchen that could support growth without cutting corners on quality or compliance,” explains Jack Watkins of Refuel Nutrition. “WAM understood the brief immediately.”
The Challenge
The new unit required a complete mechanical and catering equipment installation, including ventilation, plumbing, cooking, washing and refrigeration.
The space needed to support high-volume food preparation while remaining easy to clean, practical to work in and compliant with hygiene and safety standards.
Timescales were also important, with the kitchen needing to be operational by the end of January.
The Solution
WAM Engineering Services delivered a full end-to-end commercial kitchen installation, managing the project from initial planning through to final handover.
Key elements of the installation included:
- Two Lincat Invoq ovens, installed in a stacked configuration to maximise space and output
- Full bespoke stainless steel extraction canopy, complete with extract fan and speed controller
- Specialist DC commercial pot wash machine, designed for large trays and utensils
- All plumbing works, including hand-wash stations and basins positioned to support hygiene flow
- Two Tefcold upright refrigeration units – one fridge and one freezer
- Bespoke fabricated stainless steel table with integrated sink basin, tailored to the space
- Fly killer installation to support food safety and environmental health compliance
All equipment was carefully positioned to create a logical workflow, helping staff move efficiently between prep, cooking, washing and storage areas.
“This was a production kitchen, not a light-use setup,” says Alistair Green, owner of WAM Engineering Services. “Everything had to be robust, practical and built to cope with daily demands.”
The Outcome
The project was completed on schedule at the end of January 2026 following full testing, commissioning and handover. The new Blackwood prep kitchen now operates alongside Refuel Nutrition’s existing site, providing additional capacity and flexibility as the business continues to grow.
“The communication throughout was excellent,” adds Jack. “By the time we took handover, everything was ready to go. It’s a kitchen that works exactly as we need it to.”
